Upper Mustang - "The hidden world of the old Buddhist kingdom"
Upper Mustang trekking offers a chance to visit the hidden world of the old Buddhist kingdom of Mustang which is closely related to Tibet both in culture and landscape. For example, houses in this region are still built in the Tibetan style with white washed walls and firewood stored on the roof. Mustang is located in an area termed the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and is a unique and wild landscape noted for its variety of colorful and strange rock formation punctuated by the brightly colored village communities.
The treks itself follow the old salt caravan route used to export salt and grain from the valleys. The trek journeys to the upper Mustang region to the village of Lo Mangtang, which is considered the capital of upper Mustang region. This town is enclosed by a giant wall. Entering into the town itself, one feels like one is entering a totally different world with tiny lanes and fascinating buildings. Nearby, Pass Lo La is a view point where the sparkling town can be seen perched in the midst of the somewhat desolate landscape.
The trip itself starts with an airplane flight from the city of Pokhara to Jomsom passing through the deep gorge of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. From there, one treks upriver toward Kagbeni, a limited access area of the upper Mustang region. On the way one can visit a famous and sacred pilgrim destiny, Muktinath, before heading north to the upper Mustang region. On the return journey, one travels through Dharampur crossing two passes. Close to Dharampur is the magnificent Lo Gekar Monastery, the oldest Tibetan monastery in the world. It is said thatthis monastery was established by the famous Tibetan guru Rinpoch, who is said to have killed a dominant demon and painted the rocks around Dharampur red with the demon’s blood. Another exciting thing to do on this trek is to ride horses and visit a small monastery and an old cavern residence suited high in the rocks.
