Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve

Shukla Phanta (155 sq Km) lies in the lowlands of the extreme southwest and consists of sal forests and extensive grasslands (phanta means “grassland”).The open grasslands and numerous waterholes of the shukla phanta wildlife Reserve make it an ideal setting for game viewing and jungle safari for visitors. The Wildlife Reserve lies in Kanchanpur district in Far-Western Nepal across the Nepal-India border. The reserve is important for grassland wildlife, notably its large herd of swamp deer, the threatened hispid hare, Bengal florican, and swamp francolin. Except for a wildlife camp operating on the outskirts, there are few facilities for visitors at present.

The reserve can be reached by driving to Mahendranagar from where the reserve headquarter is only eight Kilometers south. Another option is to fly to Dhangadi from Kathmandu and then drive to the park via Mahendranagar.
